The Footprint Characteristics of Cosmic Ray Thermal Neutrons

چکیده
The advance of the cosmic ray neutron (CRN) sensing method for estimating field scale soil moisture relied largely on simulations footprint properties epithermal neutrons (∼0.5 eV–100 keV). Commercially available CRN probes are usually additionally equipped with a thermal (<0.5 eV) detector. potential these measurements is rarely explored because relevant features neutrons, such as and sensitivity to unknown. Here, we used transport modeling river crossing experiment assess footprint. We found that horizontal ranges between 43 48 m distance from probe vertical extends depths 10 65 cm depending moisture. Furthermore, derived weighting functions quantify characteristics neutrons. These results will enable new applications

Ecosystem-scale measurements of biomass water using cosmic ray neutrons
[1] Accurate estimates of biomass are imperative for understanding the global carbon cycle. However, measurements of biomass and water in the biomass are difficult to obtain at a scale consistent with measurements of mass and energy transfer, ~1 km, leading to substantial uncertainty in dynamic global vegetation models. Here we use a novel cosmic ray neutron method to estimate a stoichiometric ...
متن کاملThe footprint of large scale cosmic structure on the ultra - high energy cosmic ray distribution
Current experiments collecting high statistics in ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are opening a new window on the universe. In this work we discuss a large scale structure model for the UHECR origin which evaluates the expected anisotropy in the UHECR arrival distribution starting from a given astronomical catalogue of the local universe. The model takes into account the main selection e...
متن کاملTime Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
متن کاملTime and other Variations in the Intensity of Cosmic Ray Neutrons
We have measured the barometer coefficient of cosmic ray neutron production at sea level and find the value —9,25% ± 0,20/cmHg. We have shown that there is no diurnal variation of neutron production of amplitude greater than about 0,4 %. The effects of the large solar flare of November 19th, 1949 on cosmic ray neutrons were much greater than on ionising cosmic rays at sea level; the maximum fac...
